SF Examiner: Chip Conley Q&A

August 30, 2010

We thought this interview with Joie de Vivre Founder and CEO Chip Conley by Lisa Geduldig in the San Francisco Examiner was a good read and thought we’d share it. Originally published here.

Who has had the biggest influence on you in your life?
My dad … and, from afar, Herb Kelleher, the co-founder of Southwest Airlines.

Is there a golden rule by which you live?

I’m a believer in “karmic capitalism”: What goes around comes around. Good things happen to good people; sometimes you just have to be a little more patient.

What book or piece of writing has had a big impact on you?

Viktor Frankl’s landmark book “Man’s Search for Meaning” helped me to see that, even in a concentration camp, one can find meaning in life, and that seeking meaning is truly the most noble and worthwhile thing that humans do. (more…)

Chef Profile: Michelle Mah

August 25, 2010

Michelle Mah, Executive Chef of Joie de Vivre’s Midi Restaurant was born in Seoul, Korea and lived there until she was three years old. It was then that her family immigrated to the United States and put down roots in Southern California.  A career in the culinary arts wasn’t always in the cards for Michelle. While living in Southern California, she attended the University of California, San Diego, where she majored in Ethnic Studies, minored in General Literature and also had a focus in Photography.

From there, Michelle began working at Café Japengo and because of her love of the kitchen and guidance from chef Amiko Gubbins, she also began attending the College of Food in San Diego where she graduated with an A.O.S. degree.  Michelle then made her move to San Francisco where she attended the California Culinary Academy. Michelle worked in multiple restaurants throughout the city as well as an externship in St. John in the Caribbean before becoming the Executive Chef at Ponzu. It was there; at age 29 that Michelle was awarded the 2006 “Rising Star Chef” award by the San Francisco Chronicle. (more…)

Chip Conley’s TED Talk

June 21, 2010

In February, our CEO and founder Chip Conley spoke at the annual TED conference,  held this year in Long Beach. The  video of his speech, in which he talks with characteristic passion about measuring what makes life worthwhile, has finally been posted online, and we’re excited to share it!

The Whole Picture

January 21, 2010

Conde Nast Traveler recently ran a great Q&A with Whole Foods founder and CEO John Mackey. In recent years, Mackey has been a bit of a controversy magnet, but agree or disagree with his interesting stances, he always seems to speak his mind, and Whole Foods’ contribution in creating a market for healthier, more sustainable food is hard to deny.

He gives Joie de Vivre a nice shout out in the piece, along with some other travel companies we admire for their service ethic. His explanation of “conscious capitalism” and serving people’s deeper needs for fulfillment resonates with Joie de Vivre’s own mission: to create opportunities for our guests to celebrate the joy of life at our hotels, restaurants, and spas.

Celebrating the joy of life is something we actually do talk about (a lot, actually) in the course of our days at Joie de Vivre in trying to determine how to bring a little “joie” to the guest experience. Our Joie of Life campaign launched in the fall talks about the idea and gives people ways to create (and share) their own joy (it has some great hotel deals, too).

Not surprisingly, Joie de Vivre’s founder and CEO Chip Conley writes about the pursuit of joy and happiness a lot (and he’ll be speaking about them at the TED Conference next month), and posits that perhaps the elusive “happiness” rests in the intangibles: more of contentment and being grateful for what we have; less of seeking the elusive “more” from things that in the end may not actually meet our needs. Or via Chip’s “emotional equation”:

Happiness = Wanting What You Have divided by Having What You Want

As we move into a new year, and for us here in San Francisco, the sloshy, rainy season, we’re thinking about how we can create our own joy this year, and as always how we can find new ways to share it.

Tidings of Joie

October 20, 2009

Today is an exciting day for us here at Joie de Vivre as we launch our freshly-minted Joie of Life campaign. Behold…we bring you tidings of great joie! This campaign has some fantastic travel deals and packages. Few things bring us as much fulfillment as travel, whether it’s to a farflung destination or a trip down the Pacific Coast Highway. But moreover, we wanted to come up with simple ways we can all embrace the idea of “joie” – a new way of looking at joy that is about living each day fully. This campaign comes from our hearts to yours, and we hope it will inspire you to celebrate the little things that bring you joie. (more…)

The Hills

October 12, 2009

Check out Joie de Vivre founder and CEO Chip Conley doing something that brings him joie, hiking yoga, which combines the rather vigorous exercise of hiking San Francisco’s fabled hills and the Zen of yoga. We’ll be talking with Hiking Yoga creator and founder Eric Kipp in the coming weeks as part of our Joieful Entrepreneurs series.
